Qatar Coins

The official currency of Qatar is the Qatari riyal, which is divided into 100 dirhams. This monetary system has been central to the country's economy since its introduction in 1966, replacing the previously used Persian Gulf riyal.

Qatar's monetary history

Prior to the adoption of the Qatari riyal, Qatar used a variety of currencies, including the Indian rupee and the Saudi riyal. In 1966, with the country's independence, the Qatari riyal was introduced, initially pegged to the pound sterling. In 1975, parity was established with the U.S. dollar, which is maintained to this day with a fixed exchange rate of 3.64 riyals to the dollar.

Numismatic milestones

Qatar has issued several commemorative coins over the years, most notably the series dedicated to sporting events such as the 2022 Football World Cup. In 2020, Qatar Central Bank introduced new banknotes with advanced security features, including holographic elements and color-changing inks. In addition, Qatar was one of the first Gulf countries to issue polymer banknotes, launching a 1 riyal bill made of this material in 2020, marking a milestone in the modernization of its monetary system.
