People's Republic (1947-1952) Coin List
The People's Republic of Romania was established in 1947, marking the beginning of a period of profound political and economic changes in the country. During the first years of this communist regime, major transformations took place in the Romanian monetary system, reflecting the new ideology and aspirations of the government.
Monetary transition and first issues
After the forced abdication of King Michael I in December 1947, the new communist government initiated a radical monetary reform. The old coins of the Kingdom of Romania were withdrawn from circulation and replaced by new issues reflecting socialist ideology. In 1948, the republican leu was introduced, with denominations ranging from 1 ban to 500 lei. These new coins featured communist symbols such as the hammer and sickle, as well as depictions of workers and peasants, emphasizing the proletarian nature of the new regime.
Monetary evolution and stabilization
Between 1949 and 1952, the Romanian monetary system underwent a series of adjustments and additional issues. Commemorative coins were minted to celebrate important events of the regime, such as the anniversary of the People's Republic. The quality of the mintages gradually improved, reflecting the growing economic stability of the country. In 1952, a major currency reform was carried out that established a new parity for the leu and introduced an updated coin design. This reform marked the end of the initial phase of monetary transition and laid the foundation for the system that would last for much of the communist era in Romania.
