São Tomé and Príncipe Coins

The numismatics of Sao Tome and Principe reflect the rich history and economic evolution of this small African island nation. Over the years, the nation has undergone several changes in its monetary system, from colonial times to the present day.

Current currency in circulation

The official currency of São Tomé and Príncipe is the dobra (STN), which was introduced in 1977 following the country's independence. In 2018, a redenomination of the dobra took place, where 1000 old dobras were converted into 1 new dobra. The Central Bank of Sao Tome and Principe issues banknotes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 50, 100 and 200 dobras, while coins circulate in denominations of 10, 20 and 50 cents, as well as 1 and 2 dobras.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Prior to independence, São Tomé and Príncipe used the Portuguese coat of arms as its official currency, reflecting its colonial past. An important milestone in the country's numismatic history was the issuance of commemorative coins in 1977 to celebrate the first anniversary of independence. In addition, in 1997, São Tomé and Príncipe issued a series of gold and silver coins with motifs of local fauna and flora, which gained popularity among international collectors. The redenomination of the dobra in 2018 marked another significant moment in the country's monetary history, simplifying transactions and strengthening the national economy.
