Kingdom of Serbia (1882-1917) Coin List

The Kingdom of Serbia existed from 1882 to 1918, marking a crucial period in the history of the Balkans. During this time, Serbia underwent important political, economic and cultural changes that were reflected in its monetary system.

Political and economic development

After gaining its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, Serbia was proclaimed a kingdom in 1882 under the reign of Milan I. This period saw rapid economic and industrial development, as well as territorial expansion following the Balkan Wars. The Serbian economy was based primarily on agriculture, but also experienced growth in mining and light industry. This development was reflected in the minting of more sophisticated coins, which symbolized the country's new stature as an independent kingdom.

Monetary system and numismatics

The monetary system of the Kingdom of Serbia was based on the Serbian dinar, divided into 100 para. The coins of this period are of great interest to numismatists due to their rich iconography and high mintage quality. Coins were issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 10, 20 and 50 para, as well as 1, 2 and 5 dinars. The coins generally featured the portrait of the reigning monarch on the obverse and the Serbian coat of arms or the face value on the reverse. The 20 dinar gold coin, minted in 1882 to commemorate the proclamation of the kingdom, is considered a numismatic piece of great historical and collector value.
