Amadeo I and Charles VII (1870-1876) Coin List
The period between 1870 and 1876 in Spain was a time of great political and monetary instability. During these years, the country experienced the reign of Amadeo I and the beginning of the Third Carlist War, with Charles VII as pretender to the throne. These events had a significant impact on Spanish numismatics.
Amadeo I and his brief reign
Amadeo I of Savoy reigned in Spain from 1871 to 1873, in a period marked by instability and political conflicts. During his short reign, coins were minted with his effigy, including pieces of 5 pesetas in silver and 25 pesetas in gold. These coins are highly valued by collectors due to their scarcity and short minting period. The Amadeo I series is characterized by presenting his portrait in profile facing left, with the legend "AMADEO I REY DE ESPAÑA" on the obverse, while the reverse shows the coat of arms of Spain with the royal crown.
Charles VII and the Third Carlist War
Parallel to the reign of Amadeo I and during the First Spanish Republic, Carlos VII, Carlist pretender to the throne, started the Third Carlist War in 1872. During this conflict, which lasted until 1876, coins were minted in the territories controlled by the Carlists, mainly in the north of Spain. These Carlist coins are of great numismatic interest and are characterized by the effigy of Charles VII and the legend "CARLOS VII P[or] L[a] G[racia] D[e] GOD KING OF SPAIN". Copper pieces of 5 and 10 peseta cents were issued, as well as silver coins of 1 and 5 pesetas. These coins, known as "carlista hard", are highly prized by collectors due to their rarity and historical significance, as they represent a period of division and conflict in the history of Spain.
