Timor-Leste Coins

The official currency of East Timor is the US dollar, adopted after its independence in 2002. This monetary system reflects the unique history and economic challenges of Southeast Asia's youngest country.

Monetary History

Prior to its independence, East Timor used a variety of currencies. During the Portuguese occupation, the Portuguese Timor escudo circulated. Later, under Indonesian control, the Indonesian rupiah was used. In the transitional period administered by the UN, Australian dollars were temporarily used before the final adoption of the US dollar.

Timorese Numismatics

Although East Timor uses the U.S. dollar, the country has issued commemorative coins in U.S. cents, known as Timor cents. These pieces, minted since 2003, are legal tender but are mainly of numismatic interest. Highlights include issues commemorating historical events, such as the first anniversary of independence and the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1989 .
