Uganda Coins

The official currency of Uganda is the Ugandan shilling, which is divided into 100 cents. Introduced in 1966 after the country's independence, the shilling has undergone various fluctuations and changes throughout its history, reflecting Uganda's economic and political evolution.

Monetary history

Prior to the adoption of the shilling, Uganda used the East African guilder, a currency shared with Kenya and Tanzania under British rule. In 1966, after independence, Uganda introduced its own national currency. Since then, the country has experienced several periods of hyperinflation, especially during the 1980s, which led to the introduction of new series of banknotes with increasingly higher denominations.

Numismatic Milestones

Among the most relevant Ugandan numismatic milestones is the issuance of commemorative coins to celebrate important events, such as the 50th anniversary of independence in 2012. In addition, in 2010, Uganda introduced a new series of coins with updated designs depicting the country's wildlife and national symbols. The Bank of Uganda has also issued polymer banknotes in some denominations, following a global trend towards more durable and secure currencies.
