Armenia Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in Armenia reflects the country's political and economic changes over time. Since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Armenia has issued its own currency, the Armenian dram, with banknotes representing its culture and history.
Current banknotes in circulation
The current Armenian dram banknotes were issued in 1998 and have been updated several times. The denominations in circulation include 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 20000 and 50000 dram. These banknotes feature portraits of Armenian historical figures and Armenian landmarks, such as Mount Ararat and Noravank Monastery.
Old banknotes and relevant facts
Before the introduction of the modern dram, Armenia used Soviet rubles and temporary coupons. In 1993, the first dram banknotes were issued, which were quickly replaced due to high inflation. An important milestone in Armenian notafilia was the issuance in 2001 of the commemorative 50000 dram banknote to celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity as the state religion in Armenia.
