Bhutan Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in Bhutan is a fascinating journey through the monetary evolution of this small Himalayan kingdom. From the introduction of its first national currency to the modern banknotes in circulation today, Bhutanese banknotes reflect the country's rich culture and traditions.
Current banknotes in circulation
Bhutan' s current banknotes are denominated in ngultrum and are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 20, 50, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 ngultrum. These banknotes feature images of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on the obverse, while the reverse shows various cultural and natural features of Bhutan, such as monasteries, indigenous wildlife and iconic landscapes. The current series, introduced in 2006, incorporates advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting.
Historic banknotes and milestones in Bhutanese banknote production
Prior to the introduction of the ngultrum in 1974, Bhutan used the Indian rupee as its official currency. Bhutan's first proper banknotes were issued in 1974, coinciding with the coronation of the fourth Dragon King. A notable series was issued in 2008 to commemorate the centenary of the Bhutanese monarchy, which included a 100 ngultrum bill with a hologram of the King. In 2011, Bhutan launched a commemorative 1000 ngultrum bill to celebrate the royal wedding, marking another important milestone in its notaphilic history.
