The history of banknotes in Brunei reflects the economic and political evolution of this small Southeast Asian sultanate. Since its independence in 1984, Brunei has issued its own banknotes, which have undergone significant changes over the years.
Current banknotes in circulation
Brunei' s current banknotes are denominated in Brunei Dollars (BND) and were introduced in 2011. This series includes denominations of $1, $5, $10, $10, $50, $100 and $1,000. Each bill features portraits of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah on the obverse and various cultural and architectural motifs on the reverse. A notable feature is the interchangeability agreement with Singapore, which allows Brunei banknotes to be accepted in Singapore at par.

Prior to independence, Brunei used the Malayan and British Borneo dollar. In 1967, the Brunei dollar, issued by the Brunei Currency Board, was introduced. An important milestone was the issuance of the commemorative $25 bill in 1992, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Sultan's ascension to the throne. In 2004, Brunei launched its first series of polymer banknotes, becoming one of the first Asian countries to adopt this technology for all its denominations.
