Croatia Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in Croatia reflects the political and economic evolution of the country. Since its independence in 1991, Croatia has undergone significant changes in its currency, going through different stages until the adoption of the euro in 2023.
Old Croatian banknotes
After declaring its independence, Croatia introduced the Croatian dinar as a transitional currency in 1991. However, in 1994, the country adopted the Croatian kuna as its official currency. The kuna banknotes featured designs honoring Croatian historical and cultural figures, such as King Petar Krešimir IV on the 500 kuna bill and Bishop Juraj Dobrila on the 50 kuna note. These banknotes circulated for almost three decades, becoming a symbol of Croatian national identity.
Current banknotes and changeover to the euro
January 1, 2023 marked an important milestone in Croatia's monetary history, as the country officially adopted the euro as its currency. The euro banknotes in circulation in Croatia are identical to those used in other Eurozone countries, featuring architectural designs representing different periods of European history. This changeover to the euro symbolizes Croatia's integration into the European Union and its commitment to European economic stability. For a period of two weeks after the introduction of the euro, both the kuna and the euro were accepted as means of payment, facilitating a smooth transition to the new currency.
