Ecuador Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in Ecuador is a fascinating journey through the country's economic and cultural evolution. From the first issues to the adoption of the U.S. dollar as the official currency, Ecuadorian banknotes have reflected the national identity and political changes over time.
Old banknotes of Ecuador
The first Ecuadorian banknotes were issued in 1862 by the Banco Particular de Descuento y Circulación de Guayaquil. Over the years, various banking institutions issued their own banknotes, until in 1927 the Central Bank of Ecuador was created, which assumed sole responsibility for monetary issuance. The sucre banknotes, the national currency until 2000, featured designs honoring historical figures and emblematic landscapes of the country, such as former president Eloy Alfaro and the Chimborazo volcano.
Dollarization and current banknotes
In 2000, Ecuador adopted the U.S. dollar as its official currency in response to a severe economic crisis. Since then, the banknotes in circulation are those issued by the United States Federal Reserve. However, Ecuador continues to mint its own fractional coins, which circulate alongside U.S. coins. Although it no longer issues its own banknotes, the country retains a rich numismatic heritage that reflects its monetary history, with collections ranging from the first banknotes of the 19th century to the last issues of the sucre before dollarization.
