French Polynesia Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in French Polynesia is a fascinating journey through the monetary evolution of this French overseas territory. From its first issues to today's banknotes, the Polynesian notafilia reflects the rich culture and heritage of these South Pacific islands.

Current banknotes in circulation

Currently, French Polynesia uses the CFP franc (XPF) as its official currency. Banknotes in circulation are issued by the Institut d'émission d'outre-mer (IEOM) and feature designs that celebrate Polynesian flora, fauna and culture. The current series includes denominations of 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 CFP francs, each with unique motifs such as traditional fishing, Tahitian dance and tropical landscapes characteristic of the islands.

Historical banknotes and landmark notes

Prior to the introduction of the CFP franc in 1945, French Polynesia used a variety of monetary systems. An important milestone was the issuance of the first specific banknotes for the territory in 1914, known as "bons de caisse". Subsequently, during World War II, emergency banknotes were issued due to currency shortages. In 1969, a new series of CFP franc banknotes was introduced with modernized designs that better reflected the Polynesian identity, marking a turning point in local notafilia.
