Ghana Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in Ghana reflects the economic and political evolution of this African country. Since its independence in 1957, Ghana has undergone several changes in its currency, going through different denominations and designs that represent its national identity.
Current banknotes in circulation
Ghana currently uses the Ghanaian cedi as its official currency. Banknotes in circulation include denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 cedis. These bills feature portraits of important political leaders and national symbols, such as Osu Castle and the Independence Monument. The Bank of Ghana has implemented advanced security measures on these banknotes to prevent counterfeiting.
Old banknotes and notable events
Prior to the current cedi, Ghana used the new cedi between 1967 and 2007. An important milestone in Ghanaian notafilia was the redenomination of the currency in 2007, when the current cedi, equivalent to 10,000 old cedis, was introduced. Banknotes prior to this reform featured designs that reflected Ghana's culture and wildlife, including images of cocoa trees and the turaco bird, symbols of the country's natural wealth.
