Hong Kong Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in Hong Kong is a fascinating journey through the economic and cultural evolution of this special administrative region of China. From its earliest banknotes issued during the British colonial era to today's modern designs, Hong Kong's notafilia reflects its rich heritage and status as a global financial center.

Current banknotes in circulation

Hong Kong banknotes in circulation are issued by three chartered commercial banks: HSBC, Standard Chartered Bank and Bank of China. These banknotes feature designs that celebrate local culture and landscapes, including icons such as the Chinese dragon, the Tian Tan Buddha statue and the city skyline. Current denominations are 10, 20, 50, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Hong Kong dollars, each with its own color scheme and advanced security measures.

Historical banknotes and relevant milestones

The first Hong Kong banknotes were issued in 1845 by the Oriental Bank Corporation. Over the years, various banks have had the privilege of issuing currency, reflecting the colonial history of the region. An important milestone was the introduction of the Hong Kong dollar in 1935, which replaced the silver dollar. During the Japanese occupation in World War II, military bills, known as "invasion money," were issued. After the transfer of sovereignty to China in 1997, the banknotes retained their basic design, but were updated to reflect Hong Kong's new status as a Special Administrative Region.
