Iceland Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in Iceland is fascinating and reflects the economic and cultural evolution of this island nation. From the introduction of its own currency in 1885 to the present day, Icelandic banknotes have undergone numerous changes in design and denomination.
Current banknotes in circulation
Current Icelandic banknotes belong to the series introduced in 2013. This series includes denominations of 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 Icelandic krona. Each banknote features an important Icelandic historical figure on the obverse, while the reverse shows elements of Icelandic fauna and flora. The 10000 krona bill, the largest denomination, shows the poet Jónas Hallgrímsson on the obverse and an image of the golden plover on the reverse.
Historical banknotes and milestones
The first Icelandic banknotes were issued in 1885 by the National Bank of Iceland. In 1961, a new series of banknotes was introduced that included for the first time the portrait of the poet Jónas Hallgrímsson. An important milestone in Icelandic notafilia occurred in 1981, when the 50 krona bill with the image of Jón Sigurðsson, considered the father of Icelandic independence, was issued. In 2009, due to the financial crisis, Iceland experienced a temporary shortage of banknotes, which led to the emergency printing of new banknotes abroad.
