Historical information
The history of banknotes in Muscat & Oman reflects the economic and political evolution of the region. From its earliest issues to today's banknotes, Oman's currency has undergone significant changes reflecting its development as an independent and prosperous nation.
Old Muscat & Oman banknotes
The region's first banknotes were issued by the Government of Muscat & Oman in 1970. These early series included denominations of 100 baisa, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 5 and 10 Omani rials. The designs featured traditional motifs and local landscapes, reflecting the country's culture and geography. In 1972, following the ascension to the throne of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, a new series of banknotes was introduced, marking the country's name change to the Sultanate of Oman.

Oman's current banknotes, issued by the Central Bank of Oman, include denominations of 1/2, 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Omani Rials.
