Saudi Arabia Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in Saudi Arabia is a fascinating journey through the economic and cultural evolution of the kingdom. From its earliest issues to today's modern banknotes, Saudi banknotes reflect the progress and identity of this Persian Gulf nation.
Current banknotes in circulation
Current Saudi banknotes belong to the sixth series, introduced in 2016. This series includes denominations of 5, 10, 50, 50, 100, 200 and 500 riyals, each with designs depicting historical and cultural landmarks of the kingdom. The 500 riyals bill, for example, depicts the Murabba Palace in Riyadh, while the 100 riyals note features the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. These banknotes incorporate advanced security measures, such as holograms and color-changing inks.
Old banknotes and note landmarks
The first Saudi banknotes were issued in 1953, known as "Haj Pilgrim Receipts". These were replaced in 1961 by the first official Saudi riyal series. An important milestone was the introduction of the third series in 1984, which for the first time included English text in addition to Arabic. The fifth series, launched in 2007, marked another significant moment by introducing the 500 riyal bill, the highest denomination to date. Each series has reflected the economic development and modernization of the kingdom, while maintaining traditional elements in their designs.
