Suriname Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in Suriname reflects the economic and political evolution of this South American country. Since its independence in 1975, Suriname has issued several series of banknotes, each representing a chapter in its development as a nation.
Current banknotes in circulation
Suriname' s current banknotes are part of the series introduced in 2004 and updated in 2010 and 2012. This series includes denominations of 5, 10, 20, 20, 50, 100 and 500 Surinamese dollars. The designs feature motifs of local flora and fauna, as well as important cultural elements. The $100 bill, for example, shows an orchid on the obverse and the Central Bank of Suriname building on the reverse.
Historical banknotes and landmarks in notafilia
Prior to the introduction of the Surinamese dollar in 2004, Suriname used the Surinamese guilder. The guilder banknotes, issued from 1940 to 2003, reflected the country's transition from Dutch colony to independent nation. An important milestone was the issuance of emergency banknotes in 1986 due to an economic crisis. These banknotes, known as "kasplaatjes", were a temporary solution that marked a challenging period in the country's financial history.
