Historical information
The history of banknotes in Transnistria reflects the complex political situation in this internationally unrecognized region. Since its declaration of independence from Moldova in 1990, Transnistria has issued its own currency, the Transnistrian ruble, as a symbol of its autonomy.
Current banknotes in circulation
The current Transnistrian banknotes were issued in 2000 and have been updated several times since then. The current series includes denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 500 rubles. These banknotes feature images of historical figures and landmarks of the region, such as Alexander Suvorov, the founder of Tiraspol, and the Monument to Military Glory in Bendery.
Old banknotes and relevant facts
The first Transnistrian banknotes were issued in 1994, with rudimentary designs due to the technical limitations of the time. In 1998, a new series with improved security measures was introduced. An important milestone in Transnistrian notafilia was the issuance of commemorative plastic banknotes in 2014, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Transnistrian ruble, becoming one of the few entities in the world to issue polymer banknotes.
