The Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, has an interesting monetary history that reflects its colonial past and economic evolution. Over the years, the region has undergone significant changes in its monetary system, going through different currencies and banknote designs.

Current banknotes in circulation

Currently, the Turks and Caicos Islands uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency. However, the territory also issues its own banknotes, known as Turks and Caicos Islands Crowns. These bills, introduced in 1988, are pegged to the U.S. dollar at a 1:1 ratio. The current series includes denominations of 5, 10, 20, 20, 50 and 100 kronor, each with colorful designs depicting local flora, fauna and culture.

Old banknotes and monetary evolution

Prior to the adoption of the U.S. dollar, the Turks and Caicos Islands used various currencies. In the 19th century, Spanish and British coins circulated. Later, the Jamaican dollar was introduced and used until 1969. From 1969 to 1973, the territory briefly adopted the British West Indies dollar. An important milestone in the islands' monetary history was the introduction of the first banknotes of their own in 1917, issued by the Commissioner of the Turks and Caicos Islands. These primitive banknotes were gradually replaced by more modern issues until reaching the current series.
