United States Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in the United States is fascinating and reflects the economic and cultural evolution of the country. From its beginnings to the present day, U.S. paper money has undergone numerous changes in design, denominations and security features.

Current Banknotes in Circulation

U.S. banknotes in circulation today include denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. These bills are part of the series initiated in 1996, known as the "New Currency Design". Each denomination features the portrait of a prominent historical leader, such as George Washington on the $1 bill or Benjamin Franklin on the $100 bill. The bills incorporate advanced security features, such as security threads, watermarks and color-changing inks.

Antique banknotes and milestones in U.S. notemaking

Among the most notable antique banknotes are the "Silver Certificates" and "Gold Certificates," issued between 1878 and 1964, which were redeemable for their silver or gold equivalent. An important milestone was the introduction of the Federal Reserve Note in 1914, which became the standard for U.S. paper money. Another turning point occurred in 1929, when the size of banknotes was reduced to current dimensions to save production costs. The 1950 series introduced the slogan "In God We Trust" on all banknotes, reflecting a significant cultural shift in U.S. society.
