Afghanistan Coins
The official currency of Afghanistan is the Afghani, abbreviated AFN and sometimes represented by the symbol ؋. The Afghani currency was first introduced in 1925, replacing the Afghan rupee and the amani. The history of the Afghani has been marked by various reforms and changes due to the country's political and economic instability.
History and Evolution
The first Afghani was introduced in 1925 during the reign of King Amanullah Khan. In its early years, the Afghani remained relatively stable and was pegged to the German mark and then to the U.S. dollar. However, political instability and war conflicts, especially the Afghan civil war and the Soviet invasion, severely affected its value.
In 2002, after the fall of the Taliban regime, a major currency reform was carried out to stabilize the economy. A new Afghani was introduced, replacing the old one at a rate of 1 new Afghani to 1,000 old ones. This reform was part of a broader effort to rebuild the Afghan economy and restore confidence in its financial system.
Banknotes and Coins
The Central Bank of Afghanistan, known as Da Afghanistan Bank, is responsible for issuing the Afghani. The current banknotes in circulation have denominations of 1, 2, 5, 5, 10, 20, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 Afghanis. Banknote designs feature a variety of Afghan cultural, historical and architectural elements, reflecting the country's rich heritage.
Coins in circulation include smaller denominations, such as 1, 2 and 5 Afghanis, as well as fractional coins in pul(1 Afghani = 100 puls). These coins are mainly used for low-value transactions in the local market.
