Albania Coins
The official currency of Albania is the Albanian lek, introduced in 1926. Throughout its history, Albania has undergone several changes in its monetary system, reflecting the country's political and economic transformations.
Current currency and monetary system
The Albanian lek (ALL) is the current unit of currency in Albania. It is divided into 100 qindarka, although fractional coins are no longer in circulation due to inflation. The Bank of Albania issues banknotes in denominations of 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 lekë, while the coins in circulation are 1, 5, 10, 20, 20, 50 and 100 lekë. The designs of the banknotes feature historical figures and emblematic places of the country.
Monetary and numismatic history
Prior to the introduction of the lek, Albania used a variety of currencies, including the Ottoman dinar and the Austro-Hungarian krona. During the Italian occupation in World War II, the Albanian franc was issued. An important milestone in Albanian numismatics was the issuance of the first national coins in 1926, which included gold pieces with the effigy of King Zog I. After the fall of communism in 1991, Albania reformed its monetary system, introducing new designs reflecting national identity and the transition to a market economy.
