Argentine Confederation Coin List
The Argentine Confederation was a crucial period in Argentina's monetary history, spanning from 1835 to 1862. During this time, the provinces issued their own coins, reflecting the political and economic decentralization of the country.
Provincial Monetary Diversity
During this period, each province minted its own coins, resulting in a wide variety of designs and denominations. The provinces of Córdoba, La Rioja and Buenos Aires were particularly active in monetary issuance. The copper coinage of Buenos Aires, known as "decent", was widely used, while La Rioja produced silver coins with the famous Inca sun design. This monetary diversity reflected the autonomy of the provinces, but also generated difficulties in interregional trade due to the different valuations and qualities of the coins.
Towards monetary unification
As the Confederation advanced, the problems of this fragmented monetary system became evident. In 1853, with the enactment of the National Constitution, the foundations for monetary unification were laid. However, it was not until 1881, with the Monetary Unification Law, that the peso was established as the single national currency. During this transition period, provincial coins coexisted with the first national issues, such as the silver peso fuerte of 1861, minted at the Paraná Mint. This process of monetary unification was fundamental for the economic and political consolidation of Argentina as a nation.
