Catamarca Coin List

The monetary history of Catamarca during the time of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata is a fascinating chapter in Argentine numismatics. This period, marked by political and economic instability, saw the emergence of a variety of local coinage that reflects the complexity of the formation of the national state.

The first Catamarca issues

In 1820, Catamarca declared its autonomy as a province, which led to the need to issue its own coinage. The first coins issued in Catamarca were the so-called "macuquinas", silver coins of irregular shape and rough manufacture. These pieces, known as "Peso de Catamarca", were characterized by having the provincial coat of arms on the obverse and the face value on the reverse. The scarcity of precious metals and the lack of advanced technology resulted in coins of low quality, but of great historical importance, since they represented the affirmation of provincial sovereignty in monetary matters.

The impact of Catamarca's coins on the regional economy

The circulation of Catamarca coins had a significant impact on the regional economy. These pieces not only facilitated local trade, but were also used in transactions with neighboring provinces. However, the lack of uniformity in the mintages and the variability in their silver content generated distrust in some regions. This problem was aggravated by the appearance of counterfeits, which led provincial authorities to implement measures to improve the quality of the mintages. Despite these challenges, Catamarca coins continued to circulate until the national monetary unification in 1881, when they were replaced by the national peso currency, marking the end of a fascinating era in Argentina's numismatic history.
