Peso Fuerte (1826-1881) Coin List

The Peso Fuerte was Argentina's official currency from 1826 to 1881, marking a crucial period in the country's monetary history. This monetary unit played a fundamental role in the economic consolidation of the young nation and reflected the political challenges and changes of the time.

Origin and characteristics of the Peso Fuerte

The Peso Fuerte was introduced in 1826 as part of the monetary reforms implemented by the government of Bernardino Rivadavia. This coin was based on the silver standard and weighed 27 grams of pure silver. The first mints were made at the Casa de Moneda de Potosí, and later at the Casa de Moneda de Buenos Aires. The Peso Fuerte was divided into 8 reales, following the Spanish tradition, and coins of various values were minted, including pieces of 1/2 real, 1 real, 2 reales, 4 reales and 8 reales. The coins had the Argentine national coat of arms on the obverse and the face value on the reverse, together with the inscription "República Argentina" (Argentine Republic).

Evolution and decline of the Peso Fuerte

During its period of circulation, the Peso Fuerte experienced several fluctuations in its value due to the political and economic instability of the country. The Paraguayan War (1865-1870) and internal conflicts significantly affected the Argentine economy, which was reflected in the issuance of paper money and the gradual devaluation of the Peso Fuerte. In 1881, under the presidency of Julio Argentino Roca, a new monetary reform was implemented, replacing the Peso Fuerte with the Peso Moneda Nacional. This transition marked the end of an era in Argentina's numismatic history and laid the foundations for the country's modern monetary system. Peso Fuerte coins, especially those in good condition, are now highly valued by collectors and represent an important historical legacy of 19th century Argentina.
