Bangladesh Coins
The official currency of Bangladesh is the taka, which is divided into 100 poisha. The taka was introduced in 1972, shortly after the country's independence, replacing the Pakistani rupee. Since then, it has undergone several modifications and issues of new series of banknotes and coins.
Monetary history
Prior to independence, Bangladesh used the East Pakistan Rupee. During the British colonial period, the region was part of British India and used the Indian Rupee. After the partition of India in 1947, East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh) adopted the Pakistani rupee until its independence in 1971.
Numismatic milestones
In 2011, Bangladesh issued its first commemorative 40 taka coin to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its independence. In 2012, Bangladesh Bank introduced new banknotes with enhanced security features, including a transparent window on the 1000 taka bill, making it one of the first South Asian countries to implement this technology.
