Belgian Franc Coin List
The Belgian franc was the official currency of Belgium from 1832 until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro. During this long period, the Belgian franc underwent numerous changes in its design and composition, reflecting the history and culture of the country.
Evolution of the Belgian franc
Initially, the Belgian franc was divided into 100 centimes and minted in silver and gold. Throughout the 20th century, the currency underwent several devaluations and changes in its composition due to world wars and economic crises. In 1926, the "Poincaré franc", a new version of the coin with a reduced value, was introduced. During the German occupation in World War II, the Belgian franc was temporarily replaced by the Reichsmark, but was re-established after liberation. In the 1970s, 1, 5 and 10 franc nickel coins were introduced and became the most common denominations in circulation.
Last years of the Belgian franc
In the 1980s and 1990s, the Belgian franc underwent a series of changes in its design and composition. Bimetallic 50-franc coins were introduced in 1987, followed by 20-franc coins in 1993. These coins featured portraits of Belgian monarchs and national symbols. In 1999, Belgium joined the European Economic and Monetary Union, fixing the exchange rate of the Belgian franc to the euro. During the transition period, from 1999 to 2001, the Belgian franc coexisted with the euro as the "national unit of account". The last Belgian franc coins, minted in 2001, included denominations of 1, 5, 20 and 50 francs, marking the end of an era in Belgium's monetary history.
