Belize Coins
The official currency of Belize is the Belizean dollar, which is divided into 100 cents. This monetary system has an interesting history and has undergone several changes over time, reflecting the political and economic evolution of the country.
Monetary history of Belize
Before adopting its current currency, Belize used various currencies. During the colonial period, when it was known as British Honduras, the country used the British Honduran dollar. This currency was in circulation from 1885 until 1949, when it was replaced by the Eastern Caribbean dollar. In 1974, Belize introduced its own currency, the Belize dollar, which was initially pegged to the US dollar at a rate of 2:1.
Numismatics and relevant facts
The numismatics of Belize present several interesting aspects. Current coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 25 and 50 cents, as well as 1 and 2 dollars. An important milestone was the introduction of bi-metallic coins in 1991, with the $2 coin. In addition, Belize has issued several commemorative coins over the years, including a series dedicated to wildlife in 1974 and another celebrating the 25th anniversary of independence in 2006, reflecting the country's rich biodiversity and history.
