Bhutan Coins

The official currency of Bhutan is the ngultrum, which is divided into 100 chetrum. The ngultrum is pegged to the Indian rupee at a 1:1 parity, reflecting the close economic ties between Bhutan and India. Bhutanese numismatics is fascinating and reflects the country's rich history and culture.

Monetary history of Bhutan

Prior to the introduction of the ngultrum in 1974, Bhutan used a variety of currencies, including the Indian rupee and Tibetan coins. In the 19th century, Bhutan minted its own coins called "matam" and "chetrum", which circulated alongside foreign coins. The transition to the ngultrum marked an important milestone in Bhutan's monetary sovereignty and economic development.
