Biafra Coins

Biafra' s monetary history is brief but fascinating, spanning the period of its existence as a de facto independent state between 1967 and 1970. During this time, Biafra issued its own currency, reflecting its struggle for autonomy and its national identity.

The Biafra Pound

The official currency of Biafra was the Biafra pound, introduced in 1968 to replace the Nigerian pound. Banknotes were issued in denominations of 5 shillings, 10 shillings, 1 pound and 5 pounds. The designs of these bills featured national symbols such as the rising sun and portraits of Biafran leaders. The Biafran pound was used in daily transactions and as a symbol of sovereignty, although its value depreciated rapidly due to political and economic instability.

Numismatic legacy

Although Biafra's existence was short, its numismatic legacy is significant. Biafra banknotes are now highly sought-after collector's items by numismatists and historians. They represent a unique period in African history and are tangible witnesses to Biafra's struggle for independence. In addition, some unofficial commemorative coins were minted after the conflict, which are also of interest to collectors, although they never circulated as legal tender.
