Botswana Coins

Botswana's official currency is the pula, introduced in 1976 following the country's independence. Botswana's monetary system has evolved over the years, reflecting its history and economic development.

Monetary history

Prior to the introduction of the pula, Botswana used the South African pound and later the South African rand. In 1976, the Botswana government decided to establish its own currency to assert its economic independence. The name "pula" means "rain" in Setswana, symbolizing the importance of water in this semi-arid country.

Numismatic highlights

Botswana has issued several commemorative coins over the years, celebrating important events and the country's wildlife. In 2014, the Bank of Botswana launched a new series of coins with updated designs, including depictions of native animals such as rhino and lion. Additionally, in 2018, Botswana issued a silver collector coin to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its independence, demonstrating the country's national pride and economic progress.
