Bremen Coins

Bremen' s monetary history is fascinating and reflects the political and economic changes in the region. As a free Hanseatic city, Bremen maintained its own currency for centuries, until German monetary unification in the 19th century.

Bremen currency before unification

Until 1871, Bremen used the Bremen Taler as its main currency. This system was based on the Bremen mark, which was divided into 72 grote. The city minted gold, silver and copper coins, including pieces such as the Goldgulden and the Schwaren. The Bremen Mint, established in the 13th century, was responsible for minting until its closure in 1872.

Transition to the German Mark

With German unification in 1871, Bremen adopted the Deutsche Mark as its official currency. However, the city maintained some monetary autonomy until 1904, when it was fully integrated into the monetary system of the Reich. During this transitional period, Bremen issued local bank bills that circulated alongside the national currency. Bremen's numismatics from this period are particularly interesting for collectors, as they reflect the merging of local traditions with the new national identity.
