Brunei Coins
The official currency of Brunei is the Brunei dollar, which has been in circulation since 1967. This monetary system has a fascinating history and unique characteristics that distinguish it in the numismatic world.
Current currency and its circulation
The Brunei dollar is pegged to the Singapore dollar at a 1:1 parity, and both currencies are legal tender in the two countries due to an interchangeability agreement. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 20 and 50 cents, as well as $1. Banknotes, on the other hand, are issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1,000 and 10,000 dollars, the latter being one of the most valuable banknotes in the world.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Before the introduction of the Brunei dollar, the country used the Malayan and British Borneo dollar. An important milestone in Brunei numismatics was the issuance of commemorative gold coins in 1977, celebrating the 10th anniversary of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's ascension to the throne. In addition, in 2004, Brunei issued its first series of polymer banknotes, becoming one of the first countries in Southeast Asia to adopt this technology for its paper money.
