Bulgaria Coins
The official currency of Bulgaria is the Bulgarian lev (BGN). This monetary system has a rich history dating back centuries, reflecting the country's political and economic changes over time. Bulgarian numismatics offers fascinating insights into the cultural and economic evolution of the nation.
The modern Bulgarian lev
The current lev was introduced in 1962, replacing the previous lev at a ratio of 1:10. Since 1997, the lev has been pegged to the German mark and later to the euro, maintaining a fixed exchange rate. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 2, 5, 5, 10, 20 and 50 stotinki, as well as 1 and 2 lev. Banknotes come in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 10, 20, 50 and 100 leva, each with designs depicting important historical and cultural figures of Bulgaria.
Monetary and numismatic history
Bulgaria's monetary history dates back to the First Bulgarian Empire in the 7th century. For centuries, various currencies circulated in the territory, including the Ottoman grosh and the Russian ruble. The first modern lev was introduced in 1881, after the country's independence from the Ottoman Empire. A significant milestone in Bulgarian numismatics was the minting of the 100 lev gold coin in 1894, commemorating the birth of Prince Boris. These historical pieces are highly valued by collectors and offer a unique window into Bulgaria's rich cultural and economic heritage.
