Burundi Coins

The official currency of Burundi is the Burundi Franc, which is divided into 100 cents. This monetary system has an interesting history and has undergone several changes over the years.

Current currency in circulation

The Burundian franc was introduced in 1964, shortly after the country's independence. Currently, coins of 1, 5, 10 and 50 francs are in circulation, as well as banknotes of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000 francs. The Bank of the Republic of Burundi is responsible for issuing and regulating the national currency.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Before the introduction of the Burundian franc, Burundi used the Rwanda-Urundi franc, shared with Rwanda during the Belgian colonial period. An important milestone in Burundian numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 2014 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the country's independence. These coins, minted in silver and gold, featured designs reflecting Burundi's culture and history.
