Cape Verde Coins

The official currency of Cape Verde is the Cape Verdean escudo, which was introduced in 1977 following the country's independence. This monetary system has a rich history and unique characteristics that reflect the culture and identity of this African archipelago.

Current currency and its history

The Cape Verdean escudo is divided into 100 cents and is pegged to the euro at a fixed exchange rate. Before its introduction, Cape Verde used the Portuguese coat of arms, a legacy of its colonial past. The transition to the Cape Verdean escudo marked an important milestone in the country's economic sovereignty. Current coins include denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 20, 50 and 100 escudos, while banknotes range from 200 to 5000 escudos.

Numismatic milestones

Cape Verde numismatics has experienced several significant moments. In 1994, a commemorative series of coins was issued to celebrate the 20th anniversary of independence. In addition, in 2015, the Bank of Cape Verde launched a new family of banknotes with modernized designs depicting historical figures and cultural elements of the country. These issues not only have monetary value, but also serve as important cultural artifacts reflecting Cape Verde's history and heritage.
