Central African Republic Coins

The Central African Republic currently uses the Central African CFA franc as its official currency. This monetary system has a rich history and has undergone several changes over time, reflecting the political and economic evolution of the country.

Current currency and its history

The Central African CFA franc, issued by the Bank of Central African States (BEAC), has been the currency in circulation since 1945. Initially known as the "franc of the French Colonies of Africa", it evolved to become the "franc of the African Financial Community" after the country's independence in 1960. The fixed parity with the euro (1 euro = 655,957 CFA francs) has been an important feature of this currency since 1999.

Numismatic milestones

Prior to the adoption of the CFA franc, the Central African Republic used various currencies, including the French franc during the colonial period. A significant milestone in the country's numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in the 1970s, celebrating Central African culture and history. In 2022, the Central African Republic made history by becoming the first African country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender, marking a turning point in its monetary evolution.
