Chad Coins

The official currency of Chad is the Central African CFA franc. This African country shares this currency with five other states in the region as part of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC).

Currency history

Prior to the adoption of the CFA franc, Chad used several currencies during its history. Under French colonial rule, the French franc circulated. After independence in 1960, Chad continued to use the CFA franc, which initially stood for "Franc des Colonies Français d'Afrique", but was later changed to "Franc de la Communauté Financière Africaine".

Chadian Numismatic Highlights

Chad has issued commemorative silver and gold coins, although they are not legal tender. One notable series is the "Protection of Wildlife" series, featuring endangered African animals. In 2016, Chad released a one-ounce silver coin in the shape of the African continent, part of the "Hominids" series, notable for its unique design in global numismatics.
