Cuba Coins

Cuba's official currency is the Cuban peso (CUP), which is divided into 100 cents. The Cuban monetary system has undergone several changes throughout its history, reflecting the country's political and economic transformations. Cuban numismatics offers a fascinating journey through the history of the Caribbean island.

Monetary history of Cuba

Prior to the 1959 Cuban Revolution, Cuba used the Cuban peso pegged to the U.S. dollar. After the revolution, a new monetary system was implemented, and in 1994 the convertible peso (CUC) was introduced alongside the Cuban peso. In 2021, Cuba unified its currency, eliminating the CUC and leaving the CUP as the only official currency. This change marked a significant milestone in the country's economic history.

Milestones in Cuban numismatics

Cuban coins have reflected important historical and cultural events over time. In 1915, the first Cuban gold coin was minted, known as "the centennial". During the revolutionary era, commemorative coins were issued to celebrate the regime's achievements. A notable event in Cuban numismatics was the issuance of the 3 peso coin in 1992, with the image of Che Guevara, which became an iconic symbol and object of interest for collectors around the world.
