Curaçao Coins

The official currency of Curaçao is the Netherlands Antillean guilder, shared with Sint Maarten. This currency has a rich history and has undergone several changes over time, reflecting the political and economic evolution of the island.

Current currency in circulation

The Dutch Antillean guilder, also known as guilder, is divided into 100 cents. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 25 and 50 cents, as well as 1 and 5 guilders. Banknotes come in denominations of 10, 25, 50 and 100 guilders. The Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten is responsible for the issuance and regulation of this currency, which is pegged to the U.S. dollar at a fixed rate of 1.79 guilders per dollar.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Prior to the introduction of the Dutch Antillean guilder, Curaçao used several currencies, including the Spanish real and the Dutch guilder. An important milestone in Curaçao's numismatic history was the issuance of its first coins in 1821, during the Dutch colonial period. In 1940, the Netherlands Antillean guilder was introduced, a direct precursor of today's currency. The dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010 led to the creation of the current monetary system, although Curaçao kept the guilder as its official currency, adapting it to its new political reality.
