Danzing Coins

The monetary history of Danzig (present-day Gdańsk, Poland) is fascinating and reflects the political changes in the region. From its status as a Free City until its incorporation into Poland, Danzig has experienced various monetary systems that are of great interest to numismatists.

The currency of the Free City of Danzig

Between 1920 and 1939, Danzig was a Free City under the protection of the League of Nations. During this period, the city issued its own currency, the Danzig gulden, which was on a par with the Polish złoty. Coins of various values were minted, from 1 pfennig to 5 gulden, and banknotes of up to 1000 gulden were issued. These pieces are now coveted by collectors due to their short period of circulation and historical significance.

Transition and current currency

After World War II, Danzig was incorporated into Poland and adopted the Polish złoty as its official currency. An important numismatic milestone was the issuance in 2023 of a commemorative 5 złoty coin dedicated to the history of Gdańsk, featuring a panoramic view of the city on its reverse. This piece not only has numismatic value, but also serves as a reminder of the rich history of the city and its importance in the Baltic region.
