Denmark Coins

The official currency of Denmark is the Danish krone (DKK), which has been the country's currency since 1875. Throughout its history, Denmark has had a rich numismatic tradition, with various coins and monetary systems reflecting its economic and cultural evolution.

Danish krone: current currency

The Danish krone is divided into 100 øre and is available in coins of 50 øre, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 kroner. Banknotes circulate in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 kronor. Despite being a member of the European Union, Denmark has chosen to maintain its own currency rather than adopt the euro, thus preserving its monetary autonomy and national identity in the financial sphere.

Danish monetary history

Prior to the introduction of the krone, Denmark used the rigsdaler as its main currency from the 16th century until 1873. During this period, the country underwent several changes in its monetary system, including the adoption of the gold standard in 1873. An important milestone in Danish numismatics was the minting of the first 20-kroner gold coin in 1873, which marked the beginning of the modern era of Danish coinage and laid the foundation for the country's current monetary system.
