During the Ptolemaic period, Greek-style coins were introduced. Under Roman and Byzantine rule, denarii and solidus circulated. The Arab conquest in the 7th century brought with it the gold dinar and the silver dirham, which remained in use until the introduction of the Egyptian pound in the 19th century.
