Egypt Coins

Egyptian numismatics is a fascinating field of study ranging from ancient forms of exchange to modern coinage. Egypt, with its rich millennia-long history, has experienced various monetary systems over time, reflecting the country's political, economic and cultural changes.

The Egyptian pound: current currency

The Egyptian pound has been the official currency of Egypt since 1834. Divided into 100 piastres, this currency has gone through various denominations and designs over the years. Today, banknotes of 5, 10, 20, 20, 50, 100 and 200 pounds are in circulation, as well as smaller denomination coins. Egyptian banknotes often feature Pharaonic and Islamic motifs, reflecting the country's cultural diversity.

Monetary history of Egypt

Prior to the introduction of the pound, Egypt used a variety of monetary systems. In Pharaonic times, barter and precious metals were common for exchange. During the Ptolemaic period, Greek-style coins were introduced. Under Roman and Byzantine rule, denarii and solidus circulated. The Arab conquest in the 7th century brought with it the gold dinar and the silver dirham, which remained in use until the introduction of the Egyptian pound in the 19th century.
