Monetary History
Before adopting the CFA franc, Equatorial Guinea used several currencies. During the Spanish colonial period, the Guinean peseta circulated. After independence in 1968, the country briefly introduced the ekwele as the national currency. In 1985, Equatorial Guinea joined the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) and adopted the CFA franc as its official currency.
