Mark (1918-1927) Coin List

Estonia's currency between 1918 and 1927 went through a period of transition and establishment following the country's independence. After declaring its independence in 1918, Estonia faced significant economic and monetary challenges as it sought to establish its own financial identity.

The Estonian mark and inflation

In 1919, Estonia introduced its own currency, the Estonian mark, to replace the Russian ruble and the occupying German mark. Initially, the Estonian mark was pegged to the German mark, but it was soon hit by severe inflation. Postwar economic instability and the costs of establishing a new state led to a rapid devaluation of the currency. By 1922, the value of the mark had fallen drastically, leading to the issuance of high-denomination banknotes, including notes of up to 10,000 marks. This precarious economic situation significantly affected Estonians' trade and daily life.

Monetary reform and the introduction of the koruna

Recognizing the need for monetary stability, the Estonian government implemented a currency reform in 1924. A new currency, the Estonian kroon, was introduced to replace the mark at a rate of 100 marks to 1 kroon. This new currency was backed by gold and foreign currencies, which provided a more solid foundation. The first kroon coins were minted in 1924 and included denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 senti, as well as 1 and 2 kroner. These coins, made mainly of bronze and nickel, featured national symbols such as the Estonian coat of arms and agricultural motifs, reflecting the identity and economy of the young state. The introduction of the kroon marked a turning point in Estonia's economic stability, setting the stage for a period of growth and development until the global economic crisis of the late 1920s.
