Kingdom of France (1815-1848) Coin List

The Kingdom of France during the period from 1815 to 1848 was a time of monarchical restoration and significant political changes. This period saw the reign of three different monarchs and experienced important economic and social transformations that were reflected in the country's monetary system.

The Bourbon Restoration and the coins of Louis XVIII and Charles X

After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, Louis XVIII ascended to the throne, initiating the Bourbon Restoration. During his reign and that of his successor Charles X, coins were minted reflecting the return to traditional monarchy. The germinal franc, introduced by Napoleon, was maintained as the monetary unit, but effigies of the monarchs replaced the imperial images. Gold coins, such as the 40 franc and the 20 franc, as well as silver coins, such as the 5 franc, showed the profiles of kings and monarchical symbols such as the fleur-de-lis. These numismatic pieces not only served as a medium of exchange, but also propagated the legitimacy of the restored monarchy.

The July Monarchy and the coins of Louis-Philippe I

The July Revolution of 1830 brought Louis Philippe I to the throne, inaugurating the July Monarchy. This period saw a modernization of the French monetary system. Coins minted during the reign of Louis Philippe I reflected a balance between the monarchical tradition and the liberal aspirations of the time. New designs were introduced, such as the silver franc showing the laureate head of the king, symbolizing a constitutional monarchy. The 5-franc piece, known as the "écu", became an emblematic coin of this period. In addition, 20 and 40 franc gold coins were issued featuring a more realistic portrait of the monarch. These coins not only served for everyday transactions, but also reflected the political and social changes that France was undergoing as it moved towards a more industrial and bourgeois society.
