Louis XVI (1774-1796) Coin List

The reign of Louis XVI of France, from 1774 to 1793, was a period of great change and turbulence that culminated in the French Revolution. During this time, the coins of the realm reflected the political and economic transformations that shook the country.

The monetary system under Louis XVI

Upon ascending the throne, Louis XVI inherited a monetary system based on the gold louis and the silver shield. These coins, along with their fractions, formed the basis of the French economy. The gold louis, introduced by Louis XIII in 1640, bore the effigy of the king on the obverse and a crowned shield on the reverse. Louis XVI's coins maintained a similar design, but with his own portrait and symbols. As the financial situation of the kingdom deteriorated, attempts at monetary reform were made, such as the 1785 re-circulation, which sought to standardize the weight and purity of the coins in circulation.

Revolutionary changes in numismatics

With the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, the monetary system underwent a radical transformation. In 1795, the franc was introduced as the new monetary unit, replacing the louis and the escutcheon. The new revolutionary coins abandoned royal iconography in favor of republican symbols such as Liberty and the Republic. The portrait of Louis XVI was replaced by allegories and revolutionary slogans such as "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité". These coins, minted until 1796, marked the definitive end of the monarchical era in French numismatics and reflected the birth of a new political and social era in France.
