Germany-Democratic Republic Coins

The monetary history of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) is a fascinating chapter in 20th century European numismatics. From its founding in 1949 until its dissolution in 1990, the GDR maintained its own currency and monetary system, reflecting its status as an independent socialist state during the Cold War.

The GDR Mark

The official currency of the GDR was the East German Mark, also known as the Ostmark. Introduced in 1948, it replaced the Nazi Reichsmark and the Soviet occupation mark. The GDR Mark was divided into 100 pfennig and issued in denominations ranging from 1 pfennig to 100 marks. Coins and banknotes frequently featured socialist symbols, such as workers, farmers and the GDR coat of arms.

Numismatic milestones

Among the most significant events in GDR numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins starting in 1966, celebrating historical figures and important events of the socialist state. Another significant milestone was the introduction of the 1964 series of banknotes, featuring portraits of German scientists, artists and revolutionary leaders. GDR numismatics came to an end with German reunification in 1990, when the East German Mark was replaced by the West German Mark at an exchange rate of 1:1 for limited quantities.
